Massage therapy

Massage therapy

  • Massage dilates the blood vessels, improving the circulation and relieving congestion throughout the body.
  • Massage acts as a “mechanical cleanser” stimulating lymph circulation and hastening the elimination of wastes and toxic debris.
  • Massage increases the number of red blood cells especially in cases of anemia.
  • Massage increases blood supply and nutrition to muscles without adding to their load of toxic lactic acid, produced through voluntary muscle contraction. Massage thus helps to prevent buildup of harmful “fatigue” products resulting from strenuous exercise or injury.
  • Massage can compensate, in part, for lack of exercise and muscular contraction in persons who because of injury, illness or age are forced to remain inactive. In these cases, massage helps return venous blood to the heart and so eases the strain on this vital organ.
  • Massage improves muscle tone and helps prevent or delay muscular atrophy resulting from forced inactivity.
  • Massage may have a sedative, stimulating or even exhausting effect on the nervous system depending on the type and length of massage treatment given.
  • According to some authorities, massage may burst the fat capsule in subcutaneous tissue so that the fat exudes and becomes absorbed. In this way massage, combined with a nutritious but calorie-deficient diet, can be an aid to reducing.
  • Massage increases the excretion (via the kidneys) of fluids and waste products of protein metabolism, inorganic phosphorus and salt in normal individuals.
  • Massage by improving the general circulation, increases nutrition of the tissues. It is accompanied or followed by an increased interchange of substances between the blood and tissue cells heightening tissue metabolism.
  • Massage encourages the retention of nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur necessary for tissue repair in persons convalescing from bone fractures.
  • Massage improves the circulation and nutrition of joints and hastens the elimination of harmful deposits. It helps lessen inflammation and swelling in joints and so alleviates pain.
  • Massage stretches connective tissue, improves its circulation and nutrition and so breaks down or prevents the formation of adhesions and reduces the danger of fibrosis.
  • Massage helps to reduce edema (or dropsy) of the extremities.
  • Massage disperses the edema following injury to ligaments.
  • Massage makes you feel good!

Countering Memory Loss

Loss of Memory:

Memory consists of remembering what has previously been learned. For example, when some on e remembers a person’s name , for example, he demonstrates both that he learned the name at some previous time and he had retained it during the intervening time when he might never have once thought of it. Retention is inactive, remembering is active and both are included under the general head of memory.Ayurveda considers both body and mind to be closely inter linked. According to ayurveda no phenomenon is exclusively physical or mental. The body or mind might predominate in one case and might work as a secondary factor in another case. Thus for good memory as also for the treatment of loss of memory, both psychic and physical factors are held to be effective.Treatment:

When the power of learning and remembering is impaired to correct it, a  drug called brahmi is popularly used. It is of two types one variety is called matsyakshi and the other variety is called mandukparni. Both these herbs are equally useful in improving memory. They grow in marshy land near perennial streams. The juice of these plants is used in medicine. About 30ml.of juice is given to the patient twice daily on an empty stomach. Both of these are bitter and astringent. It is therefore administered with some honey to make it palatable. The fat is well known for its tonic effect on both the heart and the brain. Therefore, medicated ghee is prepared by boiling brahmi, along with some other drugs, in pure cow’s ghee. This preparation is called Brahmighrita. One teaspoonful of this ghee is added to a cup of warm milk, mixed with sugar and taken after stirring well till it melts and gets well mixed with the milk. This preparation is found to be more useful when the patient suffering from loss of memory is emaciated. The other drug used by Ayurvedic physicians in the treatment of this condition is called “vacha”. The herbs also grows in marshy land. The rhizome or root of these plant  is used in medicine .It is cleaned properly and then made to a fine powder by grinding. One teaspoonful of this powder should be given to the patient twice daily, mixed with honey or cow’s ghee. Many Ayurvedic preaparations for the promotion of memory like sarasvata churna, contains brahmi and vacha.

How to keep from losing your mind…..

Memory loss occurs in the young as well as the old. Occurring more frequently in the elderly, Alzheimer’s disease and forgetfulness has prompted neurologists, psychologists, psychiatrists and other brainy specialists to come up with ways to prevent such memory loss.

Ruling out disease, a major cause of forgetfulness in the young and not so young is having too much on one’s mind. ‘Too many pieces on the plate, too many things to do and no time to do it’ is a common mantra of today’s society. With cell phones, computers, email, Web pages, and other modern technology, we have worked ourselves into a non-stop frenzy where we can work 24 hours a day.

At this ultra-busy holiday season, it is easier than ever to forget things. To offset forgetfulness, the following tips can help. ‘Use it or lose it’ is the bottom line.

  1. Focus on listening more and talking less. Listening requires greater concentration.
  2. Avoid hanging around negative people. Thinking positive stimulates the brain as well as brightens your day.
  3. Stick to a healthy diet of protein foods, fruit and veggies. It gives you brain power.
  4. Avoid high fat foods. Fat clogs the arteries that supply blood to the brain.
  5. Take vitamins, especially vitamin E, zinc and Ginko Baloba. Some tests show this can help aging and memory.
  6. Read, read, read and do crossword puzzles. It’s exercise for the brain.
  7. Avoid excessive alcohol. Too much may result in loss of brain cells.
  8. Plan activities with others. Socialization offsets brain laziness.
  9. Avoid unnecessary medication. Losing weight, lowering blood pressure and high cholesterol levels can often be achieved through diet and exercise instead of drugs. Learn the side effects of medication you take. Some types of sleep aids may cause memory loss.
  10. Maintain a daily exercise and workout schedule. It improves blood circulation to the brain.
